Since 1907, when a group of local women each donated $20 to establish “Children’s Orthopedic Hospital,” the generosity of our community has helped us provide outstanding medical care to children in our region, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
This generosity has enabled us to become a medical center with a reputation for excellence in patient care, research and training.
Consistently ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and Child magazines, Children’s Hospital receives referrals from more than 300 medical centers in the Pacific Northwest and handles more than 200,000 patient visits each year. Community support is integral to our success.
Every day, philanthropy touches the lives of children with orthopedic conditions.
Charitable gifts help cover the cost of care so that no child is turned away. Funding for research helps investigators test new ideas and collect the data necessary to attract large national grants.
Endowed funds provide a dependable source of support that the Department of Orthopedics can use to advance research, improve treatments and train the next generation of outstanding orthopedic physicians.
For example, the Lynn Taylor Staheli Endowed Chair in Pediatric Orthopedics was established in 2003 in honor of Dr. Lynn Staheli, who served as chair of the Department of Orthopedics for many years. This endowment provides vital funding for several crucial projects in the department’s growing research program.
“Given the limitless possibilities for orthopedics and pediatric musculoskeletal health care, philanthropy is critical to our success,” says Dr. Ernest “Chappie” U. Conrad, chair of the Department of Orthopedics. “The Staheli chair enables us to conduct effective and meaningful research that results in improved clinical care for our patients.”
Funds raised for our uncompensated care program help ensure that our doors remain open to all children in our region, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances.
Philanthropic support for research allows scientists to launch important studies in the quest for better treatments and cures for children.
Support for program development allows departments to expand and enhance family and child support services, during and after a hospital stay.
Children’s Hospital is one of the top pediatric teaching hospitals in the country. Part of our mission is to educate the next generation of pediatric specialists. Endowed fellowships in orthopedics allow us to recruit and retain the best and brightest young orthopedic physicians.
We need your help to improve the lives of children with orthopedic conditions, and to provide care for children whose families cannot afford the full cost.
